Getting your hair in tip top shape is a quintessential part of the journey of learning to love your hair!

Summer’s almost over and navigating strong winds, sweat, sea water, dust and sun can be quite damaging to your hair if you don’t have a solid haircare routine. Taking the time to do some extra TLC is not a chore, but an important practice to prevent dealing with potential breakage, dry scalp, split ends, dull hair, or sluggish growth. These handy self-love haircare tips will help minimize the damage caused by the elements, chlorine and all the nasties that came with enjoying your summer.

Get a trim – Get rid of all unhealthy ends that might cause split-ends. Whether you are a have natural hair or rock dreadlocks, trims are non-negotiable.

Switch out your hair conditioner and hair moisturiser – Over time your hair gets used to the same products, making them start to feel less effective. To combat this, it’s best to switch out your conditioner and moisturizer. Opt for lighter products with hydrating properties. Go for quality products with good ingredients rather than brands.

Clarify your hair – Remove product and mineral build up by doing a deep cleanse. You can do it yourself at home by just washing your hair with a sulphate shampoo. African Black Soap shampoo is an excellent clarifying shampoo too. Follow this up with an apple cider vinegar rinse.

Get a professional deep protein treatment with steam – There’s only so much you can get out of store-bought hair care products. A professional protein treatment will repair and strengthen your hair without leaving it feeling straw-like. An added steam treatment will give your hair that extra moisture boost and shine you cannot achieve at home without professional haircare products and equipment.

Change your hairstyle – If you’re a frequent cornrows and braids wearer, it’s time to change your hairstyle. Repeating the same hairstyle can cause hairline damage in specific areas resulting in bald spots.

Get your locs retwisted – If you’re a locked up naturalista, get your locs retwisted to freshen up your look. Before booking your next retwist appointment, make sure it has been at least 8 weeks since your last retwist.
